HULA BEAT (NZ)

To be trained by Andrew Bobbin, and targeted towards the 2025 Jericho Cup!

For me, winning the Jericho Cup would be more than just a victory on the track; it would be a profound tribute to a legacy of courage and sacrifice that I feel a deep personal connection to. As a proud army reservist with the 8th/7th Royal Victorian Regiment in Bendigo, I carry the traditions of the original 7th and 8th Battalions, who fought with distinction during World War I. The Jericho Cup was born from the ingenious spirit of the Australian Light Horse, a tactical ruse that honoured their magnificent Whaler mounts while preparing for a major offensive. The Jericho Cup honours the immense sacrifice of the ANZACs who came before us. It’s about recognizing the resilience of the men and horses who fought for our nation, and carrying that enduring spirit forward. My dream of having a runner in the Jericho Cup is now closer to reality thanks to the tireless work of my bloodstock agent, Lenny Russo of Bluegrass Bloodstock. He understood the immense significance of this race to me and has worked meticulously to find a horse with the heart and pedigree to compete.

Hula Beat (NZ) s a flashy grey 7YO gelding with a strong staying pedigree. Sired by REDWOOD (GB), a stallion who has produced a New Zealand Derby winner and the star ANTINO (NZ), Hula Beat (NZ) is out of a ZABEEL (NZ) mare, a sire known for producing Caulfield and Melbourne Cup winners. The gelding has a record of five wins and seven placings from 32 starts. His key victories include the 2024 Callinan Family Taumarunui RSA Gold Cup and the 2024 Te Aroha Cup, both over 2200M. The horse has the perfect rating and an ideal racing pattern, as he travels and relaxes well in the run and possesses a good finishing kick, making him an excellent prospect to stretch out to the Jericho trip.

His form beyond 2200M is particularly encouraging. In his only start over 2400 meters, he finished a strong sixth in the $120k Dunstan Feed Stayers Final against a high-quality field that included the multiple G2 winner and G1 performed galloper, AQUACADE (NZ), and multiple Listed winners including ESS VEE ARE (NZ), and NEST EGG (NZ). Despite being unlucky and blocked for a run, he was beaten by a narrow margin of just 1.6L. While his recent runs on extremely heavy ground have been average, his last two starts on better surfaces have been promising, suggesting he is poised to return to winning form. His recent run on Soft 7 ground on September 3rd was particularly impressive and indicates he is ready to find himself back in the winners stall.

Andrew Bobbin’s success as a trainer is a story of a varied and accomplished career leading to his true passion. After playing professional rugby league and working as an international television journalist, Bobbin returned to racing, working as an assistant trainer before establishing his own Grampians Racing stables. His results have been particularly notable with tried horses and jumpers, with a major highlight being the impressive Brierly and Grand Annual Steeplechase double at the Warrnambool Carnival with Duke of Bedford (NZ). Bobbin has also celebrated a Listed race victory with OCEAN BEYOND (NZ) at Flemington and the Country Mile Series Final at Moonee Valley with Yulong Patrol, showcasing his ability to prepare horses for feature wins on major metropolitan tracks and at key country carnivals. Andrew and his team share our passion in winning the Jericho, and have the world-class facilities required to prepare horses for this great race.

The horse is race fit but we have taken this opportunity to get him out to the paddock for a quick freshen-up ahead of his flight to Australia on Wednesday, September 24th. Once settled in at his new home at Grampians Racing, we will kick off his Jericho campaign. Potential lead-up options include the Hamilton Cup or Horsham Cup. From there, we will build towards the two key qualifying races for the Jericho: the 3200m BM70 at Echuca on November 4th, and the 3800m BM78 at Geelong on November 14th. Given his exceptional record on rain-affected tracks, we will aim to get the horse racing in town throughout winter, and keep him on the country cups path in the lead-up to next year’s Jericho Cup.

Hula Beat (NZ) was secured privately through owner and breeder, Gerry Harvey, who has retained a large share in the horse with a keen interest to target the Jericho Cup.
